Re: Portal 31 torn up?

:D A group from western Kentucky toured the Portal last Saturday. They had a great experience. If there were problems, they did not notice. I suggest calling the Kenturcky Coal Museum at Benham and ask about the Portal. That is the location where arrangements are made to go through the Portal. I am...

Re: Sheriff's Department dealt a financial cut

One thing I wondered about was whether what the SO's office is able to confiscate factored into it or not, or whether that should have made a difference. Not commentary, but rather a serious question.

Re: HB 463 (reduction in drug charges.)

The State Government claims this will save tax payers over 400 plus million dollars. What I want to know is on which check will I start to see these savings??? I will tell you which check NONE OF THEM. What they will do is allocate the money to different pet projects and it will not save the state ...

Re: No rush for alcohol licenses in Harlan

Manchester. I'm sure the liquor store owners in both Hazard and Richmond are groaning. Not to mention the area bootleggers. It passed by a decent margin with about a 50% turnout in the town.

Re: No rush for alcohol licenses in Harlan

I read in the latest Manchester paper where it was voted in to sell liquor from stores. This may have been posted elsewhere and I didn't see it. It said that even the WalMart had put in for a license.

Re: Teen Mom Gets Probation For Spanking Her Daughter

This is a great thread. "Those were the days......" Gfunk's post, and the one about cutting your own switch particularly resonated. It's almost like listening to an oldies channel. Not that it was any fun at the time. But there was right, and there was wrong, and there was no testimony tak...

Re: Do NOT get in the water! (please read)

They say that the swimming advisory has been for several years. I've never heard anything. You would think the Newspaper would have some thing about it. Is the Martins Fork Lake included in the advisory? If it is, why are they letting people swim up there. D.F. - Hope your son is feeling better. I ...

Re: Shameful SKCTC Commencement

Tonight commencement was an absolute insult to students and their families. It began with what was little more than an hour and ten minute commercial for the college. We heard from Bruce five or six times who introduced several members of the faculty before allowing Reecie Stagnolia time to honor a...

Re: Harlan Daily Enterprise is Screwing Up!

One thing about the HL is that you can subscribe to the print edition online, not just the kentucky.com service, but rather the entire paper. I will say I have had trouble with them getting mine going. I'm supposed to have the "hybrid" subscription, but as yet haven't been able to make tha...

Re: Magistrates (Can We Get Dumpsters?)

What difference does it make what trash would be placed in the proposed dumpsters? That's a sincere question and not sarcasm. I'm not well versed in the process. I'm assuming that the issue is that some would avoid paying for garbage pickup in exchange for "free" disposal at the dumpsters,...

Re: Harlan Daily Enterprise is Screwing Up!

Newspapers--I regret--have gone into decline in large measure because of 24 hour TV and the internet. Someone previous posted that. This is true, although I prefer to hold a newspaper in my hands even though I certainly go to the internet multiple times daily. But for a newspaper to go to mailing is...

Re: Meth lab found in Cumberland

I don't think making it a legend drug--meaning it requires a prescription to procure--will solve anything. What it will do is make it much more difficult for the law-abiding to get medication for a stuffy nose. Those who have ill intent will drive to Florida or do whatever it takes to get the Sudafe...

Re: Meth lab found in Cumberland

I deleted my own post, I think. This is the worst scourge that could ever get a toehold. Whitley and Knox counties are busting them every day. I don't know whether our law enforcement need any assistance in the form of advice or not, but this stuff makes oxys look like cotton candy. BAD BAD BAD.
