You meant that as a joke, but it's the truth.
PharmGirl, social media can be used to help others, or destroys others. It can be used to help educate or dumb down.
President Trump’s statement that he is a ‘stable genius’ has a grain of truth reflected in the use of his Twitter account. No doubt his genius for the reductive conversation necessary for branding, is modern day marketing ‘genius’ brought to the highest level of our U.S. government, with the largest megaphone on earth.
Trump first Twittered his ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan in May, 2015. At a time when America had just began to turn the corner, escaping the most economically devastating effects of a great recession of almost 7 years.
Throughout his campaign we watched Trump tag his opponents with derogatory nicknames like ‘Little Marco’, ‘Crazy Bernie’, ‘Crooked Hillary’, etc. A bullying tactic we have all witnesses on the elementary playgrounds of our youth. Trump appeals to the mean nature of people, not our compassionate or reasoning side.
Trump’s use of the easy reductive conversation of social media comes naturally. It’s the same the branding tool used for mass marketing commodities in use since WWI. For the same reason Morton Salt has never changed it’s branding slogan ‘When It Rains It Pours’ for more than 100 years now.
Slogans in use for more than a rarely happens. And never happens in politics. Before Morton Salt found a way to perfect, produce and market salt that would not clump, people chipped it from blocks. By adding one simple ingredient Morton Salt perfected the character of a everyday product, in use for millenniums.
A generation from now Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’, slogan won’t mean much to those outside of politics. But the mean spirit of Trump’s preferred bully branding tactics will have left it’s ugly imprint, on what was once the most caring and generous body of people on earth.
After all if Americans applaud a President that publicly belittles those he disagrees with, why can’t Johnny or Janey do the same on the playground or in the classroom? Or any other place?
