Murderous Janet Reno.
I’m not sure that people upset about the FBI’s 51 day stand-off with David Koresh’s religious cult the ‘Davidian Branch’ know much about the cult, or their leader David Koresh. Not sure they know Koresh was a pedophile, that had fathered 12 children within the cult from both married and unmarried women in the cult. Three of the children he claimed mothers were minors when they gave birth, one of those 14.
According to Wikipedia, David Koresh was born Vernon Wayne Howell, to a 14 year old unmarried child. He had a pathetic violent upbringing, bounced from pillar to post and had been gang raped at age 8. George Roden’s mother inherited the Branch Davidians from her husband, but refused to pass it to her son George, a violent unstable character. Instead she chose Vernon Howell, who then changed his name to David Koresh.
George Roden refuses to give up what he saw as his ‘rightful inheritence’ and banned Koresh and five of Koresh’s ‘devotees from the group. Koresh first attempt to take over the religious sect resulted in a shoot out between the Roden and Koresh factions that failed to unseat George Roden. The next attempt succeeded. Roden challenged Koresh to perform a resurrection of the dead body of one of the cult members. Instead Koresh filed charges and Roden was arrested for tampering with a corpse.
The guarantee of religious freedom in our Constitution does not give people claiming a religion the right to violate the laws of our land. Nor does our Constitution give our law enforcement the right to ‘murder’ people that violate our laws, without a fair trial that proves criminal activity that warrants a legal death penalty.
We don’t know what would have happened had the FBI handled the Davidian Branch legal violations differently. We do know from interviews with surviving members of the cult, David Koresh was a pedophile with a violent disposition. We do know anyone willing to risk the lives of children in a 51 day stand off with government authorities, wasn’t following the teachings of Jesus Christ.
I don’t believe it’s fair to equate church members victimized and killed by domestic terrorist in South Carolina and Texas, with the deaths of David Koresh and his cult members that subscribed to violence. People that were not practicing Christianity as I understand it.
